Douching, good or bad?

The word ''douche'' is French for ''wash'' or ''soakhealth.''
It is a method to wash out the vagina, usually with a mixture of water and vinegar. Douches that are sold in drugstores and supermarkets contain antiseptics and fragrances. A douche comes in a bottle or bag and is sprayed through a tube upward into thevagina.
Definition according to WebMd.

Many would agree that most  health search queries on google, WebMd provides the most accurate answer. However, I did a further research on some other trusted  forums and sites like the baby center and pregnancy.org. Just to acquire more knowledge on this whole douching term.

Some suggested douching is a mixture of water with either iodine, hydrogen peroxide, plain vinegar or apple cider vinegar, baking soda or over the counter mixture. It is further clarified douching isn't complete without the use of the douche bottle as seen in the image below.

The bottle has some unique holes almost at the tip to enable the contents squirt into your vagina.

It was again further clarified in these most trusted health related sites not to douche for the following reasons ;

1. To eliminate strong vagina odour.

2. To prevent STD'S and pregnancy.

3. As an attempt to stop itchy or burning sensation at the vagina.

And of cos this practice of using the HARSH CHEMICALS  and the bottle doesn't prevent infections, as matter of fact one is at risk of the following :

1. Pelvic inflammation disease (PID).

2. Cervical cancer.

3. General yeast infections.

4. And difficulty getting pregnant.

This is said to be because the harsh chemicals alter the natural PH level of the vagina thereby killing healthy sperm upon entry into the vagina.

It was further argued again the vagina is self cleansing and contains healthy bacterium in its natural habitat. Well, the position of vagina aids gravity to take its natural cause, all bodily fluids deposited there voluntarily(e.g sperm) or bodily fluids passing the canal (e.g menstrual blood, egg white cervical mucus etc) would likely  not remain there, it's definitely going to flow out. With a little help during a shower to rinse those the fluids away with only WATER  from the vagina isn't going to hurt.

I believe the entire misconceptions surrounding whether to douch or not is been cleared. On a final note, please if you ain't comfortable with this practice due to personal believe on this particular health practice you still have an awesone life you are leading.

    1. Miriam you shouldn't have deleted your comment please, I will still answer your question to the best of my ability, use dettol but very minimal, just few drops will do and I doubt if its harmful to the vagina. I personally don't use it though because the disadvantages outweigh the advantages, I rather strife to get clean water for domestic use. Dettol is used to disinfect my sanitary ends, sterilise kids toys and clothes but never direct contact with the skin in raw or diluted form.

Miriam, I ask again, after sex what happens to the remaining seminal fluid? I know if not assisted to be cleaned out, that thing can be dripping for days and I personally don't like the scent of the sperm and many women can attest to this, the sperm doesn't have the best of scents. Please make enquiries on this and share with us, they are many young undergraduate ladies that visit this blog and would find this information useful. Thank you.

  9. I am contributing here as a medical doctor. Sometimes what we think is our perfect knowledge is perfect ignorance. You can't stress this enough. Here's the thing about cleansing inside your vagina: There's good bacteria, and there's bad bacteria. By scrubbing down the insides, you're getting rid of both. "The pH level is very delicately balanced, If you take out the good bacteria, the bad bacteria has more opportunity to overtake the vagina. This can lead to yeast infections and other issues like bacterial vaginosis, another type of infection. The beautiful part of the vagina is that it's physiologically built to take care of itself. So in general, the less you do to your va-jay-jay, the better. you'll thank yourself later in life that you left yourself alone. pls visit your medical practitioner to know how best to maintain your girls. Naija mom if you are educated, you should get your facts right before deceiving your so called undergraduates. Akuoma, desist from using soap to wash yourself, to avoid self inflicted health challenges. what stupid arguments is going on here??

    1. I strongly doubt you are educated and a medical practitioner as well. Didn't you see the back links in the post? I kept stressing and mentioning where I got my information from, probably you can't read or you just here to stir trouble cos I haven't seen your comments on this blog prior to this post. We are trying to encourage healthy discussions here and you jump from nowhere with your uncouth language. If the arguments are stupid move on to the next blog.

My entire post is from different sites on the Internet I copied some verbatim while I summarised the rest as I'm not a fan of lengthy posts, which I gave due credit to as back links.

Healthy discussions on this matter henceforth, and I'm not deleting any comments, we shouldn't be shy of what we stand for.

I'm ready for more drama bring it on.
